Birth Story: Ina May & The Farm Midwives

One Night Only! Special benefit screening of acclaimed documentary film BIRTH STORY: INA MAY GASKIN AND THE FARM MIDWIVES in Denver, Colorado.

The Mother’hood is pleased to announce a special community screening of “BIRTH STORY: INA MAY GASKIN AND THE FARM MIDWIVES” to benefit The Colorado Midwives Association.

BIRTH STORY captures a spirited group of women who taught themselves how to deliver babies on a 1970s hippie commune, rescued modern midwifery from extinction, and changed the way a generation thought about childbirth. Today, as nearly 1/3 of all U.S. babies are born via C-section, they labor on, fighting to preserve their knowledge and pushing, once again, for the rebirth of birth. With incredible access to the midwivesʼ archival video collection, the film not only captures the unique sisterhood at The Farm Clinic, but shows childbirth the way most people have never seen it–unadorned, unabashed, and awe-inspiring.

Ina May Gaskin, CPM, has been called “the most famous midwife in the world,” is the founder and director of The Farm Midwifery Center in Tennessee, and is the author of four books, including the wildly popular Spiritual Midwifery. BIRTH STORY premiered at the 2012 LA Film Festival and won the prestigious Audience Award.

” A disarming example of documentary filmmaking that stakes out an opinion with plain-spoken, commonsensical wisdom” (Variety, Aug 6, 2012)

“…An incredible story…heart-stopping.” (Matt Holzman, KCRW)

Saturday March 16th – Baby Led Weaning / Starting Solids at 10:00 – The Mother’hood

Starting solids is good, messy, healthy fun! The science and art of starting solids for your baby is very compelling. When babies are allowed to feed themselves they are much better able to self regulate and explore foods in a safe manner. Breastmilk teaches a baby about the flavors of foods the family eats. Cultures that eat spicy foods have mothers with spicy tasting breastmilk. When babies are not forced to eat, they honor their own satiety and have less risk of over-eating later in life. Babies won’t eat anything they are not ready to consume. If they have fed themselves in a sitting up posture they will spit out what they can’t swallow. Solids don’t replace breastmilk or formula feeds until a baby is past their first birthday. By playing with foods, babies can explore texture, volume and distance. Join us in exploring this ancient introduction to first foods. $12 to drop in!  Or use your 5-punch card (only $55)

Saturday March 16th – Baby Wearing 101 at 12:30 – The Mother’hood

Come discover the benefits of baby wearing with Josie Shapiro, LD. Josie has had the joy of wearing three of her own babies as well as teach families about baby wearing in her work as a doula. This one and a half hour class will cover all the basics on why baby wearing is beneficial for parent and child, which carrier is best for you and it will give you the opportunity to try many different carriers and slings. Perfect for expecting and new parents with babes in arms! This class is $15 for a single or $20 per couple. If you purchase a carrier the same day as the class you may apply the cost of the class to your purchase.

Saturday March 16th – Doulas in the ‘hood/Tips & Tricks from the Doula Bag at 3:00 – The Mother’hood

The Mother’hood is pleased to partner with doulas from the Denver area to bring you a free afternoon of labor tips and tricks. This monthly event is a wonderful way to learn some new things to add to your own labor coping plan, find out what a doula can add to your birthing experience, as well as meet doulas that are available to serve you and your family. This event is welcome to all expectant parents and is free to attend. If you don’t meet the perfect doula for your upcoming birth, you still have some great takeaways to bring home with you! We’ll also have some goodie bags for mamas to take home with them!

(This event is not a childbirth education class, but rather an opportunity to meet and greet with doulas as well as learn a little bit more about how to cope with your labor.)
